The Hublot Spec project is an experimental piece I've been working on since starting my position as a motion designer at Frantic. In preparation for a larger project, I was tasked to work on some particle experiments inside of C4D's updated particle system and see what was possible. My idea was to create a modernised theme based around the sands of time. This project isn't connected to Hublot, but this watch looks great and it had the kind of look we were after for this project.
I wanted to test out a few particle ideas and get something that had a lot of interesting movements happening, too. This was also an opportunity to really art direct what I was making and have some interesting looking transitions and camera movements.
Below are some behind the scenes shots taken from the project. I tried out a range of particle ideas and used a variety of forces and effectors to get the results I wanted. It was great to really push this project to the upper limits and discover where these ideas could go.
This is the first test render I created for the project. I built the rock material using various noise shaders and material blenders. I wanted to make a procedural material for rocks in general so they could be used on future projects. The noise material controls the entire rock shape, right down to the very small details.
Initially, I wanted to show rocks breaking up over time throughout the video, until eventually, those rocks became sand. The idea became too long in the end so it got cut down to a bite size visual for the final piece.
